Caltrain’s first electric trainset has undergone clearance testing along the corridor between Santa Clara and Tamien Stations. The test is to ensure that the trains meet all clearance requirements to operate safely along the corridor. No major problems arose and clearance testing will be extended to the rest of the corridor in the near future. Mexico City accepts first train for renewed line
China’s CRRC has delivered the first of 29 trains for Mexico City’s rehabilitated metro line No. 1. While this first train was assembled in China, the others will be finished in Mexico. The new trains are eco-friendly and feature a tire-rolling system, continuous passageway, nine carriages, and better ventilation system. The American Public Transportation Association has honored two rail passenger services among its 2022 APTA Awards and Hall of Fame inductees. The awards recognize vision, leadership and commitment to public transportation. The Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp. (PATH) of New York New Jersey was recognized for its 52% reduction in delays, improvements in reliability, capital enhancements and focus on the rider experience; and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority was recognized for its initiative to provide a safe and clean environment for employees and riders. Ontario’s Hurontario LRT guideway crews ‘dig in’
Guideway construction for the Hurontario LRT (light rail transit) project in Ontario is under way. Work along Hurontario Street marks an important step for the LRT line, which will extend from Mississauga to Brampton. The team’s current task is to construct the guideway in preparation for track installation. Work will progress from south to north, beginning between Matheson Boulevard to Britannia Road. Key areas where guideway construction is up and running include along Hurontario Street from Bristol Road to Britannia Road and at the operations, maintenance and storage facility. [railwayage.com]

Rio announces transition from BRT to light rail
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Mr Eduardo Paes, has announced a 15-year plan to replace the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system with a 251km light rail network. The city’s current network has three lines with 29 stops, and is served by a fleet of 32 vehicles each with capacity for 420 passengers. The BRT network already features dedicated BRT lanes and high-platform stations. Paes says the conversion to light rail, which will double capacity, will build on the investment already made in the BRT network, The city will continue to improve the existing BRT corridors while LRT conversion planning is underway.[railjournal.com]
