Flynn: Amtrak looks forward to working with Biden, Congress
Amtrak is looking forward to working with President-elect Joe Biden and Congress to help get the nation’s economy moving again during and after the pandemic, according to Amtrak President and CEO Bill Flynn. The Amtrak chief has reiterated his request that Congress act now on pandemic relief and economic stimulus funding, which would enable Amtrak to recall furloughed employees, restore service frequency on long-distance and state-supported routes and advance capital projects on its network. He also noted the role Amtrak and passenger rail serve in helping to address climate change. [progressiverailroading.com]

Europe plans new network of international high speed trains
The European Union is supporting a German government proposal to recreate the “Trans Europe Express” (TEE) system of high-end international trains, which operated from the 1950s to the 1970s. Inspired by the Swedish “flight shaming” movement which seeks alternatives to short-haul flights, and by legally binding EU targets to reduce carbon emissions, the plan differs from its 20th century counterpart. The “TEE2.0” system will cover greater distances, link more countries, and rely on the continent’s new high-speed infrastructure. The system will also supplement first class with basic coach-type travel. A network of overnight trains is also planned. [trains.com]

Thailand to complete largest rail station in Southeast Asia next year
As part of its plans to upgrade Thailand’s public transport system, the country plans to open Southeast Asia’s largest station next year. The Bang Sue Grand Station is intended to relieve Bangkok’s chronic traffic congestion and support the country’s role as a regional transport hub. It will replace Hua Lamphong, the capital’s main station at present. Besides intercity trains, Bang Sue will also serve Bangkok’s metro, commuter and high-speed trains, and provide fast connections with regional international airports. When it opens in 2021, 12 platforms and 24 tracks will accommodate up to 40 trains at the same time, with a daily passenger capacity of 600,000. [globalconstructionreview.com]

Lockdown to force UK rail to suspend services again?
Two months ago, with the UK government encouraging a return to workplaces, most British train companies were returning to near-normal schedules after earlier cut backs. Unfortunately, things did not work out exactly as planned. Mainline trains tended to have lots and lots of empty seats. Now, under new lockdown directives that mainline travel is only for business or essential purposes, those services are emptier than ever. Varied responses range from service cut backs to calls for fare suspensions. [businesstraveller.com]
