Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Canon City, Colorado traces the Arkansas River deep into a granite-cliffed gorge

The rail line that traces the Arkansas River through the granite-cliffed gorge started off with a bang! During the 1870s, bloody war ensued when competing railroads couldn't agree on who would run the so-called "Scenic Line of the World." Dust settled, today's classic streamliner crosses the historic route's unique hanging bridge and offers dizzying skyward views up the gorge's 1000 ft (305 m) crevice.
